Dear AAFMCC Members,
It's an honor to serve as your new President — and to do it alongside your new Board members.
Your New Executive Board:
- Jess Sikand – President (adjunct, Speech Communication)
- Susan Kirwan – Vice President & Grievance Officer (adjunct, Anthropology)
- Greg Sims – Treasurer (adjunct, Chemistry)
- Ed Rickard – Secretary (adjunct, Math)
- Amy Williams – Member at Large (adjunct, Psychology)
We stepped forward because we believe in this union and in the adjunct faculty who make Macomb Community College run. That's not a talking point — it's the job.
We took office May 1st and have had several meetings focused on how to increase member engagement and connect with you. Our contract negotiations are coming up, and we are fully committed to bringing you the best contract possible. A contract that acknowledges and recognizes the important role of we, who make up the majority of instructors at Macomb Community College, and compensates us accordingly. A contract that closes many loopholes that work against us.
As such, to gain strong negotiating power, there is strength in numbers.
Collective voices make our union strong. Officers don't make a union powerful — engagement does. Every member who shows up, speaks up, or brings in a colleague makes our contract stronger and our voice harder to ignore.
What you get from being an active member:
- A contract that's enforced, not just written
- A grievance process with people who fight for you
- Real bargaining power at the table — power that comes from numbers, not titles
- A say in decisions that affect your classroom, your pay, and your job security
What we're focused on this year:
- Strengthening communication with you with regular updates on our website & emails
- Protecting your rights under the collective bargaining agreement
- Creating more ways to get involved — not just attend, but participate
- Advocating hard for fair treatment and real improvements to adjunct working life
We can't do this without you. Attend a meeting. Ask a question. Volunteer. Talk to a colleague who isn't yet a member. We also want to give a shoutout to Marcus Lockett in Economics, who just stepped up as Steward for his department. He'll be the point of contact for his colleagues — and that's exactly the kind of engagement that makes this union work.

We're not here to represent you from a distance — we're here to work alongside you.
